Yesterday I witnessed two floggings of 24 lashes

I think the present system should be continued.

I agree with Col. Stacpole that it is sufficiently severe, indeed I think it more painful than with the knots as every lash now tells. With knotted cords the skin would be broken in the first few lashes and the sensitive nerves benumbed.
